Lara Gallery,
Kuala Lumpur

Winner of the 2010 PAM Awards in the Alterations & Additions category, the LARA gallery houses a collector's treasures of antique pre-war memorabilia, from posters to vehicle reproductions and plays host to heritage themed showings. Hence, the building is converted into a loft like space to cater to exhibition requirements.
The front façade features a three storey concrete partition and a floating cage like box that punctures through the wall and lights up at night like a lantern. Made of rusted expanded steel mesh, the protruding box cantilevers dynamically into the internal space, which is essentially a vast 3 storey empty void volume with a single feature stairwell all made of rusted steel.

The rugged finish, bare concrete floors and exposed ceilings serve as an unadorned backdrop for the exhibit objects, which become the visual highlights of the interior space.
