Putrajaya City Hall

Situated at the centre of the Core Island in Malaysia's new administrative capital, Putrajaya, the Perbadanan Putrajaya Complex, the new City Hall for the capital, stands in deference to its location at the junction of two of the main axes of the Core Island.
ZDR (in collaboration with Dubus Richez, Paris and AKB Architects) was the lead consultant for the entire complex comprising of a central office block flanked on two sides by two ancillary buildings housing a conference centre and an auditorium. Upon approval of the overriding concept for all 3 components of the project, ZDR was given the task of detailing and supervising the construction of the central component comprising of the twin office blocks that will house the council offices and a feature archway to mark the building’s significant location.

Encased entirely in an intricate weaving of stainless steel fins inspired by the traditional art of songket weaving, the feature archway or “Gerbang” is a major focal point of the square plaza that marks the intersection of the main and the Qiblat axes of the Core Island. Behind the Gerbang, the Qiblat axis is framed by the glass enclosed atriums of the twin office blocks. These atriums serve as the public transitional spaces for the council, within which meeting rooms are incorporated, designed to seemingly float suspended in the light filled space. Internal courtyards for both office blocks complete the design of the complex emphasizing the original design intention of lightness and transparency.
Putrajaya City Hall was awarded the 2006 Schindler Design Award for Mobility in Buildings.
